Only two hours from Ischia is Capri, still in the bay of Naples. We have been used to villages on rock islands thus far, but Capri is different. Capri is a high rock island about 6 kms long, but this place takes your breath away. The town of Capri is one of the most sophisticated, attractive resort towns in the world. There are beautiful shops, restaurants, hotels, gardens and flowers everywhere. It is a real tourist destination and being Sunday the place is packed.
We have anchored out from Marina Grande. Anne is our guide and has been here many times before. We firstly visit the Carthusian monastery ' Certosa Di San Giacomo'. We wander the streets to Punta Di Tiagara, where the views are breath taking.
After a simple lunch we visit Anacapri and the famous villa ' San Michel', built by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe, in the early 20th century. He built this over the ruins of an early Roman Villa. He became an amateur archaeologist and installed in the garden many articles he found. He also wrote a book, the story of 'San Michel', which made him famous.
Janet purchased some of the renowned Capri lemon perfume. MB bought more ceramics.
Our final tour without Anne is walking for 40 minuets uphill from Capri, to the 'Villa Jovis'. This Roman Villa was built originally by Augustus Caesar and later became the home of Tiberius Caesar, from where he ruled Rome for the last 12 years of his life, dying in 37 AD. This is a huge complex now in ruin. It is 300 meters above sea level with spectacular views to Naples and Sorrento.
It is difficult to anchor the night at Capri because the water is so deep . Therefore, at five pm we head off for Sorrento.
We have dinner onboard which is a great Tapas meal be Esther, including the fish we caught the night before.
