The previous afternoon we left Cesme with strong winds and a rough following sea. Our destination is 'Samos', another Greek Island which we are not technically able to anchor at. We try to find an anchorage opposite the island in Turkey but as the wind is so strong we are forced to go to Samos and anchor in a beautiful bay called 'Klima'. It is fairly late when we anchor so before dinner we have a deck coits competition with the crew, won by the captain in a play off with Esther.
Friday, it is a beautiful sunny day the wind has calmed down we take the tender and head off to the town of 'Pythagorio'. What a beautiful place! The best Harbour town we have come across. Around the busy Harbour are good quality bars and restaurants, attractive narrow streets with good landscaping and quality shops.
Samos is a very historic island. It is the birthplace of notable Greek figures such as mathematician Pythagorus and the philosopher Epicurius. The island had designed and built an incredible underground aqueduct in 524 BC. This was over 1 km long, lying underneath the base of a mountain.
It is the home of the temple of 'Hera', one of the oldest and largest temples of ancient Greece. We visit the ruins of the temple and the archaeological museum which is very modern and world class.
We then took a taxi across the island to the capital 'Vathy' (Samos) town. This has a very long waterfront with a road in front so not so attractive as the smaller port with direct water frontage for shops and restaurants. We wander the narrow streets and had a drink at lion square, before heading back to Klima bay for lunch with the crew at a great waterfront restaurant, 'Taverna Kadma'. We have grilled lobster and Greek salad. Also we sample a bottle of the famous Samos sweet wine. After a swim in the beautiful clear emerald water we are back on board and heading for Bodrum.
