We had to clear customs in Bodrum,Turkey. We cruise 1hour to check into Greece at the island of Rhodes.
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Greek islands. Its strong history having many nations in control started with the Minoans, then Mycenaeans, followed by Greeks,Romans and it was a stronghold for the Knights of St John during the Crusades. In the middle ages it was held by the Muslims and now the Greeks.
As you approach the island you are confronted with large fortifications. We hire a guide to visit the old city. Dimitri explains that although the extensive walls were built by the Knight in 13th century the castle was was completely rebuilt by Mussolini in 1930s.
The old town has lots of small winding streets, a large plaza with gift shops, bars and restraunts all crowded as four cruise ships are in port.
There is a good swimming beach in the Harbour.
We were hoping we could have left for the island of Astypalia, but it is too far and too late.
