Monday 22nd August
We had breakfast out on the terrace this morning and afterwards caught the local bus into Antibes. It was already hot and we suspected that it would only get worse. We went to the Information Centre and got a map and what else to do whilst we are here. The English girl at the Information Centre was working here for her Varsity holidays and was due to start back in 4 weeks time.
We went down the mall and settled for a place to have coffee near the “Train”. Not really a train other than this vehicle that looked like a train out of Disney towed 3 carriages. The chap at the kiosk couldn’t have cared less if we bought tickets but we did and got on board when the train arrived back from its 11.00am trip. The trip started but because the “Train” made so much noise we couldn’t hear the part that was in English. The tyres must have been made of hard rubber as the bumping about was uncomfortable. We headed around the “Old Town” and past the harbour. Every millionaire’s yacht was in the bay no matter where you looked. One of these huge ships even had a water slide from off the top deck into the bay!
We headed towards Juan les Pins which is also millionaire bay and shopping. We could have got off here and caught the next train back but because of their lunch time breaks the next one back wouldn’t be until 2.30pm – so we stayed on board. Back in Antibes we walked a few streets down to the marina and bay. We ogled at the wealth here. It was beer time and we found a place in the shade and had lunch. It was an Irish pub and had an All Blacks salad on the menu. It also had a Springboks salad! After eating, it was so hot we decided to get the bus home and go for a swim in the pool. Very cooling and apart from a family from Italy we had the pool to ourselves. A couple of dips and we headed for our room to read. The only channel on television here that is in English is the EuroSport channel. Oh well I spent the next hour watching cyclings Tour of Spain.
We thought that we would go down to the beach at Garoupe for dinner. It was so hot walking down the hill to the beach. Now the problem was that all of the places that are open during the day don’t open for dinner in the evening. Whilst we were checking this out we saw the prices to hire a bit of beach with a lounger €18.00 and an umbrella €15.00 - €51.00 for us two but you can stay all day. Anyway we walked back up the hill by a different road to the restaurant we went to last night – good meal once again but the service stinks. Will have to go into Antibes tomorrow night.
