Across another border and another change of currency, not too much trouble at this border either,so far so good.We were met by our guide Pedro, who is very much into ecology and his love of the Pantanal. We drove for a couple of hours and eventually arrived at our lodges, right by a river, built on stilts and hotching with MOZZIES.I had so much sun lotion and mozzie lotion on I was sliding around inside my clothes,it didn´t matter how much I had on the wee monkeys still got me anyway.
We went down the river for a couple of hours in a tiny wee tin boat,we saw monkeys with their young, the most beautiful Macaws, blue, green and red and a huge rodent called a Cappebarra, not sure about the spelling but that is how it sounds.Back at camp the owner had a tame Cappebarra, his name was Chuchukka, when the girls went into the water tubing he sneaked in underwater and came up beside them ,you could hear their screams for miles.
At night it is pitch black and again the night sky of the Southern Hemisphere is mesmerising. The jungle is alive with unfamiliar sounds and the insects light up the place as they fly around,I know I'll never be anywhere like this again in my life.So I'm soaking it all up.
We did a trek through the jungle the next day, snakes, monkeys and beautiful birds, cayman and deer, what a wonderful day,I climbed on and off a truck all day,the girls were jiggered.
Met a lovely girl from Switzerland her name was Petra, she was working with the Swiss Red Cross in Sucre and wanted to spend some time in the Pantanal before she went home.
Did some fishing with a Bamboo rod the next morning,Pedro said no fish no lunch,I was more than happy to starve, caught Piranas and Sardine,Chuchukka got them!!!
The whole area is desperate for the rainy season to start, the fish are gasping in the pools as there isn´t enough oxygen in the water, poor wee beasties. Some of the land we walked in will be well under water this time next month.
Set off at lunch time the next day for Bonito.
