Luckily, we had been recommended a place to stay when we arrived in Sandakan. It was not a touristy town at all. Very local and nothing there except for a pretty diabolical KFC. We'd been up all night after staying at the airport to catch the early flight, so slept the day we arrived.
The following afternoon we went to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. Was pretty awesome. There was a massive feeding platform that the tourists could watch from while quite a way back, the rangers fed them in the jungle. One cheeky little monkey refused to eat and jumped onto the platform to shake a mans hand. Obviously everyone rush to it so he wasn't that close for us to see.
Here, the locals are allowed to enter for a 5th of the price that westerners pay. Because of this there are always hundreds of them with their screaming kids and 7 wives. And despite the various signs cleary stating in several languages, 'Do Not Smoke', 'Please Leave bags and Rubbish from pockets at reception', they still smoked, flicked their flags into the jungle and threw rubbish on the floor. One orangutan picked up the plastic bag and started eating it before the ranger could take it off him. And even though they have 4 or 5 ranger watching over the crowd, they would still touch the monkeys and prentend they didn't understand what anyone was telling them. This part of it was a real shame!
But the work they do here is great and we got extremely lucky walking back to reception from the jungle. As we came back, the naughty one that had jumped up earlier was walking along the walk way with another one. It caught us totally by surprise. Its unfair to touch them as they pick up diseases very easily. They are being rehibilitated back into the wild, which meansthey can get aggressive, as theyare wild animals at theend of the day. So we didn't stroke them. But they were so close and we got an amazing video of them.
The rest of the week in Borneo didn't quite live up to the same expectation. Rach had to sleep under the airconditioning vent that was leaking, so not only did she wake up soaking the next morning, but freezing, with an aweful cold and had to be taken to hospital because she couldn't breath. It was a pretty funny day though, and the nurses loved Jamie. Just a bummer Rach we had to spend the remaining time in bed. But Polly the landlady becauseour little maid and we got the room discountedeven more - winner! Obviously, we didn't quite make it to climb Mount Kinabalu or to Sipidann to dive- but it was a good excuse to plan going back!
