Yo peeps! Having muchos fun here in Athens. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing city but it certainly has a lot of character! There are still riot police (with gas masks on and shields) wandering the streets looking rather stern! The civil unrest and tension is easy to see. There is a lot of graffiti and much of it certainly in reference to the incident that occured in Athens last year. It was also nice to see students shooting up heroin at the Polytechnik College in broad daylight and in the presence of the afore-mentioned police!
Yesterday we headed to the National Archaeological Museum, which was free because it was a Sunday! Yay! It sported a rather large and impressive collection of Egyptian artifacts (and yes - more statues!) - I shall not care if I never see another statue in my life again!
The Lykavittos Hill is the tallest point in Athens, and we climbed to the top for magnificent views of the Acropolis, Piraeus, the Peleponese, and the sea! The weather was perfect and the sun even had a UV index of 2 - i'm slightly pink. Burnt in Athens in January - hahaha!
Today was the day designated for the Acropolis and all the extras that come with it - and fortunately for us students it was free! I'm so glad I brought it with me as I've been able to get so many reductions in all the museums with it. Not just useful for exams and getting into the library and gym back in Glasgow!
We expected the Acropolis to take us the better part of a day but infact, since the museum was closed it only took us 3 hours to see everything. The preservation of the monuments is not nearly as good as in Italy - the signposts and information are terrible and the Athenians don't seem to take any pride in their heritage, which is a real shame.
We also visted the stadium of the 1896 Olympics that took place in Athens - which I was pretty pleased about! Finally, the comical event of the day was visiting the tomb of the unknown soldier at Syntagma where the changing of the guards occurs - it is just hilarious! To see what I mean look at the video I just uploaded! Priceless!
One more thing... Guess where I'll be in one week's time?
Lazing on the beach or swimming in the 28 degrees Indian Ocean or eating seafood with lots of spices... Or more likely... sweating, burning and battling with mosquitoes! Ciao! x
