James and Ellie in Europe
Day 5:
Today we left Lausanne to head to Zermatt. Was our first real day of proper travelling! Three stunning train journeys later we arrived in Zermatt. We'll miss Lausanne and the lake but seeing the scenery on the way has already made it worthwhile.
We arrived just in time to put our tent up and get to the local shops for supplies. We were doubly lucky as the rain started just as the final pegs were going in the ground!!!
The campsite itself is very famous but is also basically two small (uneven) fields between the main road and the railway line!!
For those of you who don't know, Zermatt is a town that doesn't allow any cars at all!!! There are electric golf-like carts and a few beautiful horse and carts too.
We searched around for somewhere to eat, but all the places were pretty expensive, even for Switzerland. We then came across "the only English pub in Zermatt" wittily named 'Potter's Bar'
The chef and staff are Swiss-Italian and the food is as good as you could imagine with that combination!!
The wine was Swiss and amazing too and it was ridiculously cheap to boot. Three courses and a bottle of wine for twenty quid!!! Think we'll be going back there again!
We were amazingly lucky on the way back to the campsite and managed to get a perfect view of the Matterhorn as the sun was setting. A perfect end to a perfect day.
