Our first day on the Great Ocean Road (GOR) we didn't have the best weather. It was drizzly and although we could make out some of the views it wasn't as beautiful as we had anticipated. We stopped off at all the key spots and a few more. One of the highlights was Grey River road where you can spot wild koalas just chilling out in the eucalyptus trees. We were lucky enough to see one running across the road and even luckier for him that he didn't get hit! They can move fast if they feel like it. As we didn't have the camp6 book it was a guessing game of where we could camp. The police are strict along this famous road so we didn't want to risk a fine. We stayed in a forest on the first night where we got a bit wet and muddy but met a nice group of travellers who had just met the previous day and decided to go to Adelaide as a group! The second night we went for a paid site on the cape in another koala hot spot. It was brilliant we walked around the site and saw loads of the little things, mostly asleep but cute nevertheless.
The town of Lourne was one of my favourite spots and a lot of other people thought so too. The houses around this area were very impressive and James and I took a few pictures of some of the best ones, maybe we can design a house on Frinton sea front!
The twelve apostles are on the top things to see and the weather had improved when we arrived so we got to see them with some sunshine. They are really impressive but we preferred Loch Ard gauge and The Arch just around the corner and spent time here on the beach and eating our lunch.
As you drive further away from Melbourne it gets less touristy but just as stunning. We spent the day visiting a historic town called Port Fairy, the beautiful town of Warrnambool and Portland. We had heard that you can see seals in Portland if you take a walk around the peninsula. We started the walk and were getting hot, tired and hungry thinking we must be close when we saw a sign reading 'well done you're half way' we quickly turned around, I think we have seen enough seals on our trip so far to go to too much effort! Once again though the views were fantastic and we did see another blow hole and a petrified forest that were closer to the car park!
We had more time left than we had thought so decided to drive to South Australia to visit the first town as we had been told there were lagoons and sink holes worth seeing.
The sink holes were impressive and like nothing I've seen before but James was disappointed as he was expecting the opportunity to throw anything in the hole and see the earth swallow it up! The lagoons were better than we had both expected and even though we weren't visiting in summer when they apparently get bright blue we were sufficiently impressed with the colours and the situation of these huge lagoons. They were so convenient just on the outskirts of town!
We didn't get the chance to see much more of South Australia but will hopefully be able to come back here on another trip.
