After a great night's sleep from our day of touring around Petra in Jordan we checked out of our hotel in Wadi Musa and drove along some interesting, winding, and steep hills to get to the Wadi Rum Protected Area in South Jordan. We arrived to a chilly wind blowing the sand around the desert and were met immediately by a 4x4 driver willing to take us around the desert. We drove our car to the village and hopped into the back of a very old and tired Toyota Land Cruiser. We were soon bouncing around the desert of Jordan listening to gears grinding and metal scraping in some of the most beautiful scenery we've ever seen. Our stops included a large Siz (Canyon in Arabic) where Layla decided to re-enact the Pride Rock scene from Lion King; A Rock Bridge that was a bit perilous but breathtaking at the same time; the Lawrence of Arabia House; some ancient Bedouin hieroglyphs; and finally a climb up an amazing sand dune. We ended off our tour back at the village and said good bye to Salim, our driver, got in the car, turned on the heat, and were on the road to make the long, 5 hour drive to the Dead Sea where we would spend the next 3 days in Jordan. Along the route we were stopped by multiple police checkpoints; saw some incredible viewpoints; came across a large herd of wild dogs upon a cliff (with some puppies that Layla wanted to take home); and even had a rock thrown at our car by a young Arab kid after being turned around and almost lost in a small village. The drive was long but the view of the Dead Sea as we decended the highlands of Jordan was worth it. We arrived at our hotel and got a glimpse of the sun going down over the hills across the Dead Sea in Israel.
