We get up to a swarm of sand flies and decide to leave to find some semblance of normal bug free civility. Well we find a car park in central Nelson and are delighted to discover it has shower and laundry facilities - bonus!
It's at Montgomery square carpark in the middle of the town - $2 a shower and $3 a laundry wash. Jacq goes in and finds a woman in charge supervising a group of girls washing their clothes.... She has a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp. Jacq asks her if she knows whether or not we can camp there overnight - bulldog lady is immediately quite hostile gives her brief one word answers and turns away - "no" which soon appears to be her favourite word.
So, we shower and Jacq washes our clothes whilst Matt goes in search for a new cappo for his guitar. Jacq gets talking to the girls in the laundry - two are from sussex and surrey and the other girl is from the states - they are pretty uncomfortable wih bulldog lady too and find it odd how shes been hanging over them. It's entertaining. When their washing is done bulldog comes in turns off the machines and literally says "right, that's it, if it's dry it's dry if not take it as it comes or pay more" she's pretty rude and snappy, Jacq of course can't help herself and laughs, and, gets caught. Bulldog looks at her as if to say "what u laughing at?!" Jacq asks her if anyone has ever told her she's quite abrupt "yeah! You have to be" Jacq replies with "not always, we're nice people and aren't gonna take the piss" bulldog retreats and walks off, Jacqs left to do her washing in peace not bothered once - joy! Bulldog - 0 Jacq -1.
We head off in search of a Paddys day tipple all washed and feeling fresh and Jacq bumps into a fella with an "irish" t-shirt. He's Barry from Dublin and suggests we try the Prince Albert for a live traditional band at 5pm. The pubs buzzing and the band are a two piece firing out evey traditional tune in the book - we're delighted!
Matt decides to move the camper to our overnight spot as it's not far away, he thinks, and Jacq sits nattering with an English couple - Irish dancers turn up and do a few reels, it's fab, poor Matt makes it back after they have finished sadly but we met Barry again and his lovely girlfriend Fiona also from Dublin. It's a great night and they recommend we go to The Vic afterwards to see an Irish band at 8 - these guys are brilliant! The craic is great we meet a fab bunch and have a blast merrily cooking super noddles drunk in the camper at 2am - can't beat them for munchies!
