Bloody St Patricks day - we're not well! We parked up in Haven car park and were greeted by an angry resident shouting that it's not a free over nighter despite our camper app stating it clearly is - great start!
We need to make tracks to Marlborough Sounds to see the French Pass so it's a quick subway, wash and off we head north, dying. It was a great night but we can't handle it - useless!
The drive couldn't be worse and on a more stable day we'd probably have loved the endless mountainous gravelly windy roads that change abruptly form left to right so aggressively it is as if they know we over indulged last night. They don't agree with Jacq at all and a quick roadside stop is needed... bye bye subway.
We see Elaine Bay, which is really pretty but continue further north west to the French Pass. The roads are crazy!!!! Big cliff drops and gravel, we pass an overturned lorry literally on it's head on one of the more shallow banks being dragged up by three cranes. Matt's taking it easy and we get to the French Pass for about 5pm deciding to stop for the night and camp up in the doc (department of conservation) site literally facing the sea with a beautiful mountainous backdrop. It's $10 each a night and has decent facilities.
We are thrilled to find a shop there as it's been a good few hours of us realising shops in mountains are not the done thing, but the proprietor certainly knows how to take advantage of his setting. Everything appeared to be circa $5 - can of carrots, toilet roll, tin of shepherds pie mince from 1984.... Jacq asks if he has any sausages and he points to the the dodgy faded labelled mincemeat, we grab lemonade and opt for a veggie diner of mash and beans - seriously! We think our stomachs might be shrinking as we are stuffed with a fairly normal portion as opposed to being our typical glutinous selves.
Jacqs reading "gone girl" and is pretty engrossed, early night Matt has a hectic day driving and is off drink ... Again.
