Home tomorrow to Ireland to see the family and after 6 months of blogging we will be done, not planning to document the family trip home so this is the last one, so sad it is almost over but what an experience we have had and how lucky we are to have done it together. <3
Anyway...moving on...
Today is our last day before we fly home tomorrow and it will be an action packed one - Matt is driving the Golden Circle route and we can't wait, this is someone we didn't do when we were last here so we will get to all experience it together for the first time.
This is a 300km route in full....
Thingvellir is our first stop - the park sits on Lake Pingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in the country. It is a great park easily navigated using the well-constructed winding boardwalks throughout and we learn quite a lot of history by listening in (cheapskates) to some tour groups.
We are told about Logberg, known as Law rock - it was used as a platform for people to stand on and give a speech or share important news. Council rulings were shared here, but the logs location is unknown due to shifts in the landscape since the middle ages. Next, we head to the Geysir - we are pretty excited about this. This is home to the first erupting geyser found by a European traveller. There are two of these, a small one and a large one. We all group around the big one and run screaming as it erupts a shower of water drowning us all on the spot - Anna is not a fan of this part but the rest of us are in stitches.
We move to our next stop the epic Gullfoss.... this is a huge double waterfall 31 meters tall and the site of a nature reserve designated in 1979. The mist rises around us at the viewing platform and the sheer force of the falls make a thunderous echo in our ears as we shout above it to speak. It is a sight to behold and in the really cold winter months the entire falls will freeze over - we are so coming back to see that!
It has been a busy but brilliant day, we are all a bit drenched and a bit tired so rather than cook we opt to stop in the city on the way home for Matt & Jacqs favourite restaurant to end the trip - Restaurant 73 where the steaks are deliciously divine... so we do it, steak and burger night for all and a great goodbye to wonderful Reykjavik, tonight is packing and sleeping as we prepare to go home.
This has been the best experience of our lives, we have to read this book often so we can remember how lucky we were and the wonderful people who made it so great.
Signing off,
Matt & Jacq
