We get up around 10am and dress smart with a plan to head off for the day in a hired car to Key West. It's like the American Caribbean, supposedly its really similar and also the most southerly point of the U.S.
We hire a car through Sixt rentals for two days costing around £80 including full coverage and set off on a 4-hour drive to Key West.
Jacqs snoozing but wakes for the tail end of the drive which is a very pretty one. We hit the keys around 1pm, it's gorgeous, you're driving on a narrow bridge at a low speed in case of high winds with the sea either side of you. We find a bar and grill facing the water at Key Largo and stop for dinner. The food is yummy Matts loving the American burgers, too much, and Jacq has chicken parmesan with pasta.
An hour later we are in Key West and it's just as we were told - so like the Caribbean it's unbelievable! Streets are buzzing with little bars and shops filed with music and happy tourists, the buildings are gorgeous really quaint and everyone seems in great spirits.
We walk around for an hour checking out the main strip Duvall street, the sky changes to a very dark grey and we decide to jump in the car and find the "most southern point marker" Matt jumps out and gets some pics just in time before torrential rain thunder and lightning strike.
We were lucky! We head back to Miami and stop at a Tiki bar about halfway Jacq has a daiquiri and Matt sings Ed Sheeran at the karaoke, we're shattered when we get back and crash. Would love to stay in Key West for a few days it's a great spot, a day trip was a tad too ambitious.
