We land in Kuala Lumpar airport. It seems that every time we get off the plane we are bleary eyed and dishevelled. Making us prime targets for the poachers outside. You are at your most vulnerable as soon as you step off the plane. The currency is alien, Malaysian Ringgit, we had only just gotten used to the rupee. However the Kl airport is a far cry from any Indian one. The pavements are clean, the smell is fresh and it is an easy transition from the airport to china town. We check into a backpacker hostel lead by Charlie who tries to retrace her steps from when she was here a few years ago. After we freshen up we go in search for food. Chinese ice tea, fresh noodles in gravy and dumpling soup. Satisfied from our first Malaysian feast we wander the streets of KL. Perusing the markets, admiring the mosques, salivating at potential dinner options and riding the free city bus. That night we dine on traditional Chinese pork clay pot and toast to young spirits who have moved on.
We immerse ourselves in the Malaysian culture in the form of a reggae bar not too far from our hostel. We play pool and meet a Somalian guy. A man who, for once, only wants our conversation.
The next day, slightly hungover we make our way to the sheraton. Mama D has booked us in the 5 star hotel so we can enjoy a little bit of luxury before the we travel frugally around Malaysia. Once checked in we explore these alien surroundings. The marbled floors, the fresh towels, beds that resemble heavenly clouds-we test it's stability by jumping on them-, the swimming pool and of course we waste no time in making our way to the 38th floor to enjoy the free spread and cocktails.
The next morning after a smorgasbord of breakfast delights we head to the airport to meet mama D. After being reunited and catching up on travelling tales and family gossip back home we bus it back to the hotel. The next couple of days are spent, enjoying the pool, glimpsing at the illuminated Pertronas towers at night, smoking shisha in the night market and familiarising ourselves with our new surroundings. On the 9th we catch a domestic flight to sabah, which is in Borneo apparently.
