Today we headed for Agra... Today was mostly driving and stopping at te occasional sight or temple. On route we stopped at Abhaneri, which is a large step well. It's amazing and huge... The small amount of remaining water was over twelve foot and it comes up even higher after a good monsoon season. The well consists of numerous steps that head down to the water below. The idea was created by the Indians as they believe that water is pure and holy and that by using a shared bucket it was unholy. Therefore step wells were created so that all castes (hierarchy in India related to status) could collect water from the same well.
We also popped by a small temple for a blessing... You ring the bell to let god know that you are there are pray to the Hindu god. The man at the temple puts a small red dot between your eyes on your forehead and gives you a blessing. He then gave us a all a small red and yellow threaded bracelet for protection. Unmarked girls wear it on the left and guys always wear it on the right. It is believed that it will bring luck and protection... Once I is removed it should be disposed of some wear clean and holy... Like tied to a tree or something. It shouldn't be thrown away in a dirty place as it is believed it will reverse the god luck.
We then stopped at a midpoint which is an area along the main road where you can grab lunch or buy food... It's like a service station! We stopped for lunch and were led out to a lovely lush green garden and ate our lunch under a tented canopy. It was such a nice atmosphere and the food.. Although pricey, was yummy! We had aloo stuffed bread with the most intense chilli and garlic dip that you mix with yoghurt... Was so nice.
On arrival to Agra, we checked into our hotel and had a free afternoon and evening so we went for dinner n the hotel restaurant. We ordered butter paneer, vegetable curry with vegetable Byriani and roti. I couldn't finish it as there was so much food... Neither could Steven which is completely unheard of!!! We retired to bed exhausted and watched a movie. We were situated at the front of the hotel and although on the forth floor, could hear the traffic below... Is weird but we actually slept so much better with a bit of back ground noise. This evening we developed a little bit of Delhi belly! Not sure wether it was the food or just the fact that I had actually eaten a full meal but passed quickly. I slept really well.
