Another day of travel yesterday arriving into Hanoi around 3.30pm. Lots has changed in 18 years. No army planes forming a guard of honour for new arrivals at the airport. A brand new terminal and amazing modern road in from airport to city with fancy bridge. Journey in was pretty quick. May de ville where we are staying is perfect. What it lacks in style it makes up for in location. The rooftop pool is small but an absolute oasis and our rooms seem to be removed from the constantly tooting horns and street noise. Top floor pool and restaurant view over Hoan Kiem lake is gorgeous especially at night. What's more it is right in the heart of the old quarter so we can come and go as we please. Not a lot of change in the old quarter. The Vietnamese have become a bit more savvy about what sells. North face, under armour and superdry gear everywhere. More cars and motorbikes than 18 years ago. It seems inflation has been kind to beer with our old favourite Bia Hoi the organic draught beer made daily costing only 30 cents a glass. Amazing dinner on the street last night. The wee barbecue came to our table along with a plate laden with raw meat which they helped us cook. Night swim and catch up with Burrowes before bed.
