The drive from Arugum Bay to Ella took us through more Elephant country. It is largely flat with the odd rocky outcrop for a lot of the way then when you get to the junction to turn off to Ella the road becomes steep narrow and winding. Our two night stay in Arugam Bay was very relaxing. Easy to see why Anna and Boyd love it so much. It could easily be a barefoot long holiday. The town itself is pretty small. Main Street dotted with cafes restaurants and bars and surf shops. A few other shops selling thrown together beachwear and that is about it, a couple of more sophisticated restaurants selling coffee and smoothie bowls etc otherwise it is pretty basic. Spent a wonderful couple of days relaxing by the pool at Trinco Blu. The sea was gorgeous to swim in. The beach was pretty dirty further down from our hotel with lots of litter lying around. Should have gone snorkelling at Pigeon island. Too late we found out it was stunning, we had thought it was overrated but spoke to an English guy who has snorkelled in lots of places in Asia and he said it was fantastic. Wow how spectacular Sri Lanka is. It has been a hectic 48 or so hours. The arrival at the airport was hilarious. Smooth with regard to customs and visas etc and not a queue in sight but we had to laugh at the appliances being sold at duty free. Our departure from the airport was nothing compared to those leaving with fridges, washing machines and microwaves. An early start hoping to get to Sigiriya before the heat and the crowds. A world heritage site and rightly so. There was no issue with the crowds and was in fact nice to see some westerners at last.
