Ian & Claire's Adventure
Diving in the Mamanucas
We booked ourselves into the West Motor Inn for a few nights and booked a 10 tank dive with Reef Safari for the next two days.
The hotel was nice, bit shabby but the first night in a bed for ages, we were in luxury.
We were picked up by James in his Jeep at 7:45am. James is the general manager, he’s originally from Southampton UK but lived in Oz for 7yrs. The outfit is brand-new so all the equipment is brand-new, we suddenly felt confident and relaxed (it was recommended by Christa at Planet travel ).
We met Fi (James’ mate) and John the captain and Romano and set off to our first dive site. James explained we were technical diving, half is decompression so lots safer and we could go to 30m and do 3 dives that morning. Our first dive was a drop off, ok but not great coral, it was the first time we’d gone deep (25m) and the currents and surges were new to us so exciting. The second was great, loads of great different types of coral and huge shoals of big fish, the third was similar. The surges were funny at 9m we swung from side to side and so did the fish. After the dives we felt pretty tired and rough (not used to it) so went back and slept till 8:30pm
The next day we met our fellow diver Jordan a sorry but big fat Texan, and went for our first dive to Mana. It was a shark dive at the feeding site then to the supermarket, we saw one nearly straight away, then we saw a huge group of barracudas and angel fish and tuna, then more sharks in the distance. I got a bit stressed when one game towards me so kept pushing Ian in between me and them….Ian was loving it so I wasn’t being cruel, think I was a bit of a sissy. It was all pretty cool though.
Our final dive was at Honeymoon Island a shallow dive at 9m just a reef around the island, lots of nice fish and a real test to our bouyancy skills.
Now we are divers….11 dives under our belts!
