Holly's and Helly's BIG adventure!!
Arrived in Vienna at 10pm and took the bus into the city centre station, Westbahnhoff and started our trek to the hostel! After a couple of minutes of trudging up the appropriate street we spotted a Wombats sign and cheered. Alas it was not to be, we had actually booked into the Wombat hostel further up the road. We finally arrived about 10 minutes later exhausted and ready for our beds. The room was quite amazing, very clean and comfortable between 4 of us and our own PRIVATE bathroom with a power shower!!!! The other 2 girls in the room, Kim from Korea and Karen from Ohio were both lovely and we had a chat about travels, where we were all from and what we were all doing, before going to sleep.
The next morning we woke up to blazing sunshine and heat with a lovely breeze, after breakfast we all went our seperate ways, and Helen and I set off to explore. We were amazed by the trams and spent a lot of time riding them around the city in order to get our moneys worth from our 5 euro travel ticket! The number 1 or 2 tram is a great way to see some of the main buildings in Vienna. The rest of the day was spent wandering around checking out the sights.
We returned to the hostel at about 4pm to rest our weary legs and got ready to go out in the evening! We took a tram and metro to the Rathaus (in the picture) where the Vienna Film Festival was taking place and wandered around the many food stalls selling tradational foods from countries around the world as well as beer, cocktails and soft drinks, we bought something to eat and drink then settled down in some of the seats set up in front of the Rathaus where the screen was placed. The film started at 9.30, a filming of the Viennese Orchester playing Mozart, with the building lit up behind it and the stars in the sky it was an absolutly amazing experience, one i would definatly love to repeat.
The next morning we checked out of the hostel and stored our rucksacks in lockers at Sudbahnhoff. We set off for the Belvedere where I wanted to see a Klimt exhibition. Helen sat outside in the sun, while i went inside, Klimt's 'The Kiss' is displayed there and to see it was absolutly amazing, it is so different to see something yourself rather than a copy.
After wandering around the gardens we went to a large park nearby and rented bikes, we cycled out to the Danube national park, it was really lovely to be doing something other than walking and we got to see parts of Vienna that we wouldn't otherwise have seen. The evening was spent back at the rathaus, where the food was cheap, and then we trundled back to the station to await our train.
For our first night train trip we decided to go down the cabin route and settled into sleep, which surprisingly we both did. We arrived in Prague at 5am the next morning and set foot onto Czech soil at 0600 hours.
