Holly's and Helly's BIG adventure!!
Well on arrival yesterday at Helsinki Vantaa airport, Helen and I were quite impressed with the newness of it and also the lack of passport checking! Got our bags, and off we went into the Finlandic wilderness, well not quite, but close! Find the bus to Helsinki city centre and board with our bags, almost falling over as we do so! On reaching the railway station we decide that Helsinki isn't quite as impressive as Stockholm, but we look on the bright side and carry on! Decide to leave our huge rucksacks in lockers in the station, and try to find the bus that will take us to our hostel, cue an hour of searching only to find that it goes from the bus station 5 minutes away, yes we are doing well! We get on the bus and show our piece of paper with the hostel name on it to the bus driver because we can't pronounce it and he tells us he will let us know when to get off, 10 minutes later he hollars down the bus, so we climb off, he runs off after us, actually he was telling someone else, so we climb back on having entertained all the other people on the number 132 bus! The hostel is right near the sea, so we have swam in the Baltic Sea, something to cross off the list of things to do! There is also a sauna, which Helly and I took full advantage of yesterday, going in a total of 4 times and having 2 showers just because they are so lovely and hot, although no shower curtains!
Today we got up early making an executive decision to catch the 10am ferry to Tallinn in Estonia. Have breakfast and leave with plently of time to spare at 8.45am, find the right bus and get the right ticket and get to the railway station to try and buy a travel pass. We have both decided that people in Helsinki are very very unhelpful, we got sent to a total of 6 different places in the search for this pass, only to find that we could have bought it from the tram stop quite easily! Alas we missed the 10am ferry and then the 12pm ferry due to technical difficulties in finding the port! But fear not, we found another ferry at 12.25 and sailed into Tallinn port at 2pm.
While Helsinki is in my opinion not a place I would ever visit again, Tallinn's Old Town is absolutly beautiful! cobbled streets, lots of amazing cathedrals and lovely old houses with tonnes of character. We ate soem lunch in the town square watching the music being played on a huge stage, set up to celebrate Finland being the head of the EU, then go on to admire the surroundings and the Russian influences. This is a city that I would recommend, almost as much as Stockholm! Unfortunatly we had to return to Helsinki, but we did manage to find everything this time, and arrived safely at the hostel! Travelling to Vienna tomorrow, something we are both looking forward to if only to leave Helsinki, it just hasn't lived up to the other 2 cities!
