This was the day Jim and I had planned to split up so he could visit with his relatives and I could visit mine. So after a wonderful breakfast spread put on by Waldemar (including champagne!) I headed back to Wuppertal, about an hour and half drive. Arrived just in time for a meat, potatoes and gravy dinner at Erwin and Christa's. Cousins Gertrude and Harry, as well as Elizabeth, were already there. Had a great visit with Harry (see pic) who I have very fond memories of as a child. He spent about 1 1/2 years in Edmonton as a young man in 1965/66. As he told me, he had to spend many hours babysitting us kids (7 of us including the Janke kids). We had a wonderful time reminiscing about his time in Edmonton. At 4:00 came the usual Kaffee und Kuchen, after which we made a trip to the cemetery to visit the grave of Tante Lydia (Mom's aunt). We also looked at the site of a former WW2 bomb shelter nearby. Then, after a quick drive through the city, where we also saw the famous Schwebebahn that's unique in the world to Wuppertal, it was back to Erwin and Christa's for a supper of homemade pizza. These people do nothing but eat! I wanted to get back to Bielefeld before dark, so I said goodbye right after supper. I'm getting more comfortable and confident driving on the Autobahn. Traffic was relatively light, so I cranked up the Ford Focus to 180 km/hr for a short while. It had more to go, but that's all I dared -- quite a rush! Made it safely back to Bielefeld in any event and in good time.
