The original plan called for us to head back to France today, to visit the Vimy Ridge WW1 memorial. However Jim suggested we spend an extra day in Bielefeld instead and I concurred. We've been on the go for 3 1/2 weeks now, with a lot of driving since the cruise, so we were ready for a bit of down time. In the morning Waldemar (see pic with Jim) took us to visit Bad Salzuflen, a nearby town with natural hot water springs. It's a Kurort (spa town) where a lot of elderly people live and come for vacation. We took a tour of one of the large complexes there whose purpose in former times was to extract salt from the hot springs water. But their sole purpose today is to create vapors which one inhales as one walks alongside the structures, which are designed to evaporate the hot springs water. Supposedly for the health benefits. Our tour also included about 20 minutes in a chamber where one breathes "dry fog" created by breaking the spring water into microparticles, again for the supposed health benefits. This was followed by drinking a glass of the spring water, which didn't taste very good but supposedly is good for treating all sorts of ailments. Then it was back to another relative of Jim's, for a great Rouladen and Rotkohl dinner (my favourite) along with wine and homemade "honey schnapps" after dinner. More eating! After dinner we headed to the central shopping district in Bielefeld. Jim checked out trombones at a music store and I struck a bargain on a special purchase for myself at another shop. We then had a light supper at an outdoor cafe, even though the weather in Germany has been unusually cool. High was only 17 deg. again today. Since we plan to leave very early for Paris tomorrow, we turned in early.
