On the road again to the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. After staying at the rather shabby Bay View, the Swiss Garden Hotel was far more to our taste. The pupils searched out their own lunch after unpacking and exploring the hotel. In the evening we set out to visit the famous monkeys of Selangor, not be confused with the pupils! Some of the grey primates had lovely cute orange (ginger) babies. The Hogger-Gadsbys proved to be ace at attracting the monkeys to eat off their shoulders. Mrs. Mason was not quite so sure as they crawled all over her. Give her Millie any day. As the sun set Sea Eagles could be seen flying over the Mangrove forests and below their vast white headed forms were graceful gliding swallows catching insects as they came out to feast in the evening. As the skies turned orange we headed for dinner, at yet another local restaurant, in the village in the hills below the Portuguese Fort. Travelling down we passed the poisoned well in which a concoction of strange plant juices were placed to give any traitor an agonising death. Beware Mr. Smith!
It was then onto the fireflies at Kuala Selangor in the deep mangrove forest infested with man eating crocodiles, not seen for decades! Silence fell on the group as the amazing site of the flies, which at first appeared as Ikea Christmas lights, twinkling on and off came closer into view. Some flew in the air as they ate smaller insects while flirting with their flashing lights to find mates. This put a whole new light to going out for dinner! Many delighted faces were seen as some of the flies landed on faces, hair and hands. A magical evening to live long in the memory.
