Penguins!! Tiny little blue penguins return to their nests each night - so for a generous contribution (...) you could watch the little fellows waddle up the beach. Think we saw about 13 in all, awkwardly plumped onto the sand as another wave carried them the final distance. Still, they recovered well, jumping to their little feet, as if aware that they had an audience of 40 gawping tourists. (Lucky for them we weren't allowed cameras).
So in 2's or 3's they made their way up the rock face, now I felt for them slightly here - after a full days swimming/fishing/hunting they are faced with a cliff face the equivelant of Mt Everest. Anyway, they made it to the top - all bunching together to tackle the next of their challenges - the road. It could have been some time they were stood here, as if nudging each other to the front so someone else would be the first to get squashed. Finally their journey was at an end and bed was in sight. We entertained ourselves by wondering what they would be saying to each other as they parted ways.
I should also mention Clive at this point. Clive is the name of the seal that seemed to be mocking these little fellows as they started their ascent. Like I said, it really wasn't an easy start to the end of their day. Anyway, Clive (my name for him, not official - please don't quote me) soon slumped off into the water - where he was going at that time of night is anyones guess...
The next day I stopped off in Twizel - why you ask? Coz it's called Twizel!! Yes. That was my reasoning and the basis of my decision. Suffice to say that the name is the most impressive and interesting part of the town. Still, had a nice little walk around, before heading back to the hostel to do battle with some old lady for the hob. Those that think it is acceptable to cook fish in a shared kitchen are not those I consider normal.
Anyway... onwards!
