Leg 8 race 14 day 2
Was woken at 1.30 to get on deck for 2am! Hadn't slept much.
It was cold on deck could see lots of stars. Carl helmed for the whole watch. All boats are pretty close. We have to beat mission, telemed, Dan nang as all close on points. All on 72 points each and all in 5th place.
Saw the sun rise came off shift at 6am had bread and jam then in bunk for a sleep till 10am
Up on deck at 10am for 4 hours could see 9 boats around us. In front was Lmax Derry Seattle and garmin we were in 4th closely followed by telemed. Did lots of tacking shift went quickly. Could see English coast and got reception for a while texted the kids but it went off again.
Came off watch at 2pm cleaned the heads. Went for a lie down in bunk. Heard telemed give a pan pan call out. A 69 year old lady on their boat has a suspected broken shoulder so they have called coast guards for assistance. Makes you realise how dangerous this race is they sent a helicopter to air lift her off the boat
Laying in my bunk you get used to all the noises for example grinding the winches tacking etc and amazing what you can sleep through
Back on watch at 6pm and we tacked so much I lost count ; hard work but good ; although Carl was hit in the face by the Yankee lazy sheet and was thrown to the ground as we tacked Jimmy was at the helm and heaved to while we got Carl down stairs to assess his injury. Luckily only a little cut on his cheek and a bruise. We finished the race at 21.47 Utc and 22.47 bst pity it was dark but then had to take sails down then motor around til 4am !
