Today we went on a day tour to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok famous for its proximity to the bridge over the River Kwai. Our first stop was at the war cemetery where 7,000 Allied serviceman are buried, most of whom died as prisoners of war whilst they built the burma railway. Our next stop was at the JEATH war museum, this was very educating as there is a reconstruction of a prisoner of war camp and other war memorabilia. There were Many photos of the people at work on the railway and how they were treated. It really showed and displayed how terrible war is.We then walked over the river kwai bridge.
From here we drove for an hour to get our train journey on the Death railway (its named this as so many prisoners of war died building it,either by disease, starvation or purely beaten to death Japanese and Korean guards. The train journey was very pleasant and had great views of the passsing mountains and river. The train is used everyday by the local people. After here we went to see a really pretty waterfall in the national park.We climbed up to the top of it to take some pictures. our last stop was at the Tiger Temple, we were told the tigers are all hand reared by the monks and we can go and have our photo taking with them no problem (as they are full up with food and wont be hungry!!).As we arrived there were loads of animals walking around freely and we finally reached the tiger canyon, yes there were monks on stand by and the tigers were chained up.We ventured into their den and had our photos taken with them.We reckon they were probably drugged up as there wasnt much movement from them.it was good to get close to stroke them. (and to come away with all our body parts) :-)
