What a lovely day we've had today! Mike took us to St. Ives where we had a wander around and saw some beautiful beaches and old buildings. It's very pretty with some quaint little shops and galleries and huge uphill walks! Just as well really as I had to walk off the massive pastie I had - genuine Cornish; very nice. Some of the country roads (narrow lanes!) are too hair-raising - I'm glad I wasn't driving. They are very pretty though. Sometimes it's like driving through a green tunnel with a smattering of wildflowers at the sides.
After St. Ives (where we didn't meet a man with seven wives), we went on to St. Michael's Mount. As you can see in the photo, St. Michael's is a small castle on an island just offshore from Marazion near Penzance. The island is joined to the mainland by a causeway that is only accessible when the tide recedes and at other times you have to reach it by boat. We took the boat out and walked back along the causeway. St. Michael's Mount is modelled on Mont St. Michel in France, I think it was the same order of monks that first built the chapel there in 1135 and copied the one from France. We had a really good look around the castle and a nice cup of coffee before walking back along the newly exposed causeway. Mike took us on the scenic route home (not that there's another kind in Cornwall - it's all scenic) and all in all we've had a lovely day out.
