Another busy but very enjoyable day for us. Mike has been a wonderful tour guide, driving us from one side of the county to the other (just as well because there's no force on earth that could get me to squeeze a car down those hedgerowed lanes!). Today we went to Trelissick Gardens which is a National Trust property with a huge manor house. The house isn't open to the public but the gardens are so we went on a two hour woodland walk (yep, you guessed it - more steep hills and steps). It was extremely pretty and we skirted several of the small bays, often coming out unexpectedly to the most beautiful sweeping views across the water and up the next set of hills. Sadly I undid all of that good work with a slice of treacle tart with clotted cream... yum! Mike then took us on the ferry across to St. Mawes which is a pretty little village that looks almost the twin of St. Ives but without the crowds. Our next stop was at a little church at St. Just in Roseland (not to be confused with St. Just at Penwith which is near Land's End) which is the prettiest little 13th century church right at the water's edge. The gardens have been planted with semi-tropical plants as well as more common English plants and they extend up the surrounding hills for quite some way. The gardens are also the site of the church graveyard and there are quite recent graves lying alongside much older graves in a higgeldy piggeldy arrangement that is really lovely. The paths around the gardens are lined with small granite tablets engraved with short homilies from the bible - very enchanting. After that, we had a very nice mezze lunch in Truro and we're now resting up before going out for dinner tonight. I can't believe we've already come to our last night in Cornwall - it's gone so quickly! We're planning to visit Tintagel tomorrow which is reputed to have been the home of King Arthur, before going on to Shepton Mallet which will be our base for the next few days.
