The alarm went off at 3:00am yes that's right I am on holidays and I did say 3am however I knew in my mind that the early morning would be worth it, because we were heading to Abu Simble. It is a three hour drive from Aswan however you have to travel in a convoy with a police officer on board so there are only two departure times 4:00 and 11:00 by going in the morning we miss the afternoon heat at the temple and still have the afternoon free to relax on the boat or in our case cruise the Nile on a felucca. We had the most uncomfortable bus we have had all tour but managed to get some sleep on the drive there which helped the time pass. The bus parking lot is at the back of the temple so you don't see anything until you walk down towards Lake Nasser and round the bend. Then you are confronted with an amazing masterpiece. How these monuments were ever carved out of the cliff walls is amazing but to add to this, both temples had to be moved when the High Dam was built (or else they would be under water now).Although they document this in the visitor center and we watched a video of the process on the bus it is still hard to believe they could move such massive creations without damaging them (Most people on the tour agreed that they could see none of the cuts that were made in the moving process and that if they hadn't been told that it was moved they would never have known).Abu Simble is almost on the Sudan Border and consists of two temples one for Ramses II and the other he built for his favourite wife Nefertari. The inside was filled with Statues and stories using the essential and sacred symbols and hieroglyphics, much the same as the other temples we have seen. After we explored both of the temples we headed back to the bus and started the long drive back through the desert to the cruise ship.We arrived back on the ship and went straight to lunch (another big buffet); this was followed by a couple hours of chill out time where most people went for a sleep.Elena and I went and relaxed in the sun, while Rene played table tennis with the boys. At 4 we went for our felucca ride along the Nile.It was very relaxing until the captain pulled out that Nubian drum that we have seen a couple of times on this trip already. It wasn't long before we were all up dancing and singing again. Then they pulled out some plastic bags and set up the on board shop!!! There was some really jewelry that was very cheap so I bought a couple of pieces. We ran out of wind on our home would journey so they two younger boys on the trip helped the guys row the boat back. When we returned to the cruise ship I headed straight for the sundeck and had a drink with some of the others while Rene went to find Elena so as they could hit the on board ice-cream bar together. We finished the evening with the traditional buffet dinner we are all going to roll off this boat tomorrow, and then it was up to the lounge bar for the Nubian Show.It was a great nights entertainment that again included audience participation (everyone got up to dance) and much to Rene enjoyment I was again picked out by the dancing lady to dance in the middle.(The picking on the blonde hair and blue eyes is starting to grow a bit thin). We headed back to the cabin around 9:45 and packed as tomorrow we leave the ship.
