Hi everyone,
Another early start, breakfast at 6! Packed the bus as the sun was rising over the sea. 1st stop for the day was Cape Leeuwin, where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet.
Then we continued further south through the Karri Forest. After about 45 minutes, we randomly stopped at the side of the road. Andy our tour guide told us about the forest and we got out to take pictures. At this point we were unaware he had made his 1st schoolboy error. After about 10 minutes he managed to tell us he had run out of fuel and haddn't filled up the Jerry Can. He blamed it on a faulty petrol gauge! So we were stuck 25km away from Pemberton for an hour whilst he hitched a lift into town & back.
Got to the Bicentennial Tree a little later than expected. The tree had metal prongs all the way up so you could climb all the way to the top, some 60m high. It is still used as a fire lookout today. Rose climbed to the 1st platform, but Hayley stayed on firm ground, a wise idea as it wasn't the safest thing to climb in slippery trainers!
Another lunch stop in the wind & rain.
On the way to our next stop, the Valley of the Giants, the heavens opened. When we arrived it was still raining, but we did the Tree Top Walk all the same. It was a 40m high steel suspended cable walkway among the canopy of the tingle forest - the whole thing wobbled -a lot!!
After getting soaked in the forest it was back to the coast and Williams Bay National Park, where we stopped to view the large granite formations known as Elephant Rocks. So called because they look like a herd of elephant's bums coming out the sea! We managed to see them not in the rain, but did nearly get blown away!
On the way to Albany, our 2nd overnight stop, we took a half an hour stop in Denmark, visiting the fantastic IGA supermarket!
Got to the hostel pretty late and attempted to cook chicken stir-fry on faulty gas cookers which took over an hour - who said stir fry was quick!? Then Andy made his 2nd schoolboy error - bush trifle! Chocolate cake, custard (which he proceeded to get everywhere, including over Hayley!), fruit salad and cream. All mashed together with a potato masher. There was a lot of it left over!
That was the end of Day 2!
Lots of love, Hayley & Rose xxx
