Our first week in Buenos Aires has pretty much been spent partying all night (nightclubs don't open till 2am!) and sleeping/recovering all day but we have managed to see a few sights!
Tuesday 19th April
We arrived in Buenos Aires (one of South Americas most electrifying cities! After Argentina's economic collapse in 2002, BA bounced back and created a renaissance that keeps the city aglow today) about midday and got a taxi to our hostel. We went straight to bed to catch up on some sleep!
That night the hostel was having a party (it has a sister hostel and they alternate the party night) so we ended up partying all night!
Wednesday was spent mostly hungover! We headed out early evening to grab some food, then watched a film and headed to bed!
Thursday we did a walking tour to La Boca; One of BA's prime tourist attractions, situated along the old port and at the Boca (mouth) of the Rio Riachuelo, was built by Italian immigrants from Genoa. It's main attraction is colourful Caminito a short pedestrian walk lined with corrugated- metal buildings. Local artists display their brightly coloured paintings, adding to the vibrant ambience. The neighbourhood is also home to the Boca Juniors football team.
We got the bus to La Boca and first visited the Boca Juniors stadium; Club Atlético Boca Juniors is an Argentine sports club based in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It is best known for its professional football team, which currently plays in the Primera División.
Boca Juniors is one of the most successful clubs in Argentina and in the world, having won 41 official titles at the national and international level. Domestically, they have twenty-three league titles; they last won the 2008 Apertura tournament. Internationally, the team has won eighteen international titles, a record shared with A.C. Milan. Their success usually has Boca ranked among the IFFHS's Club World Ranking Top 25, which they have reached the top position six times (mostly during the coaching tenure of Carlos Bianchi). Boca was also named by the IFFHS as the top South American club of the 1st decade of the 21st century (2001–2010).
The club was founded on April 3, 1905 by five Italian immigrants. The club currently has a fierce rivalry with River Plate, also from Buenos Aires. Matches between the two clubs are known as the Superclásico and is one of the most heated rivalries in Argentina and the world as both clubs are the two most popular in the country. Boca's home stadium is Estadio Alberto J. Armando, which is colloquially known as La Bombonera. The youth academy has produced many Argentine internationals such as Nicolás Burdisso, Carlos Tévez and Fernando Gago, who have played or are playing for top European clubs. And also obviously famous from Maradona!
We then went to a little restaurant that was like an alfresco BBQ area and had a lovely lunch.
Then we walked through Caminito street which was very cool but touristy there were lots of outdoor restaurants with tango shows on stage. We wondered the shops and checked out the Market stalls. The area is beautiful all the houses are made of corregsted iron because the area used to be full of water from the river they used iron so they would float! They are all painted different colours; they did this to reinforce the iron and the reason they are multi coloured is because they used the paints from the port!
After Boca we came back to the hostel - as we'd only booked 3 nights we were due to check out on Friday but we'd decided we wanted to stay another 4 nights. The hostel was completely full so we went to all the hostels and hotels around but there was no availability! We were just about to book into an expensive hotel when the hostel said they'd had a cancellation!
Friday 22nd April
We went to McDonalds for brunch! Then booked onto a city bus tour (it wasn't what we were expecting! It was a mini bus!) we visited the different districts of BA. Stopped at the Cementerio de la Recoleta but as we only had 15 mins we didn't get a chance to have a good look around (were gonna go back!) then we stopped at the presidential house (he doesn't actually live here but flies in everyday by helicopter!) then we went back to La Boca where me and Joe decided to leave the bus tour with another couple and go for a few drinks! We sat watching an amazing tango show. We left about 7pm as it's not safe at night and got a bus back to our hostel then went out for dinner with a few others.
Back at the hostel we partied till the early hours. Again!
