Good afternoon!
On the way to the orphanage I passed by Said's house as I had some left over items which I gave to his daughter, she was really pleased with them. The girls at the orphanage all have short hair and so they could not use the brush or hair bands that I had bought them! Said gave me his male version of a ketenge which I can't remember the name of which was a nice gesture.
Yesterday afternoon was an emotional time for me, saying goodbye to the children. They kept asking whether I would be staying at the orphanage tonight but I had to tell them that I was travelling to Dar es Salaam, they kept telling me no! I bought two bracelets that two of the children had made, I bought one from Emmanueli for 1000 shillings then when Ema returned from choir I bought one off of him but I didn't have any change so I gave him 5000 shillings for it, he couldn't believe it and said "what, for me?" I said "yeah, for you" and he pounced on me giving me a massive hug!
I gave all of the children a massive hug each and did shed a tear, its strange that you can get so attached to something in such a short period of time! I wrote my name in the volunteer wall and they all crowded around in amazement as to what I was doing. I was so sad to leave the children, they really are a lovely group, ever so polite and appreciate everything that everyone does for them!
When i got back to the house I gave the flip flops to the neighbours as they were all too big for the children at the orphanage. I gave three boys flip flops first and they flew in by the shed load. I've never seen so many children appear so quickly! I also gave them some pens, at fors t they started fighting over them but I told them to share or I would have them back and that sorted them all out haha.
I ate some banana chips whilst packing my bag, ended up working my way through almost the whole bag! Tea was not ready until 21:30. It was meat in a tomato sauce and rice, I tried a piece of meat, I could have chewed my way to Australia to it! So I lerr my remaining two pieces. I had gone past hunger last night and still felt full from all of my banana chips!
This morning I got up just gone 6 for a shower, there was no water, so it was my third African shower. It was so cold this morning! Hardest shower I've had there. Maybe it was beca use it was so early. Last night Yael ,Delia and I asked for breakfast at 7am,it was 6.50am and Mama Queenie was not up, it takes her about half an hour to do some toast! I knocked on their door and Kabalo said "oh yeah your breakfast" then he called me and said that they had no breakfast for me, and I said to go to town and get something, he knew I was there and wanted breakfast, it gets beyond a joke. Mama Queenie comeback with a parachichi for me which I was very surprised at! They never buy us any fruit and the vegetables are more rationed than the food!
Yael, Delia and I headed for the noa at 8am, it filled up quickly and we departed Karatu at 8.30am. It was just over two hours to Arusha, when we got there we were bombarded by people shouting Mzungu! And asking us whether we wanted a taxi. I managed to get a ticket for the shuttle bus to Kilimanjaro airport for 10000shillings (£4), not bad for an hour's journey. Last night when checking my ticket I realised it was from Kilimanjaro and not Arusha, strange as it was a return flight, but this is Africa, anything can happen!
Yael and Delia previously saw a European restaurant in Arusha when they were there a couple of weeks ago, they successfully found it again and we went for a coffee. it was like a different world in there, full of mzungus, and an actual menu. After a coffee we headed to the touristic market. We looked at some elephant trousers at the first shop, but he wanted 25000 shillings and I said to hI'm that he's the first shop so he's the most expensive! I bargained my way through the market, ending up with some trousers, a bag, a purse and some keyrings for just under 35000 shillings, didn't do too badly! Dad's haggling skills have come in handy, learnt from the best haha!
We went back to the European restaurant for lumcg, the dad as had a burger whilst I had a breakfast. We all loved the food so mugh! It really tasted amazing! I cannot remember the last time I was that excited for food! Cheap too!
We headed back to the bus station as I was catching the shuttle around 2:45pm. We got hassled again until Yael told someone we were going to the moon and they walked away so thats what we started to sAy and they all left us alone,it was so funny! Saying goodbye to Yael and Delia was sad, we've got on so well! We've said that we will stay in contact which will be really nice. I've said they can come to England and they've said I can visit them in Switzerland, hopefully we will stay friends and stay in contact. They are lovely girls and I really appreciated the fact that they come to Arusha with me today! Getting on the bus, hmmm... I got put right to the back of the bus, and was the only mzungu on there! The guy sat next to me iswas a tour guide for Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro and he helped me know what to do, where to go and reasonable prices when the bus stopped at the station. They all paid 2500 shillings to Moshi which is further away from Arusha than Kilimanjaro, and I paid 10000 shillings,so definitely a mzungu price! But I said that for me £4 for an hour journey is a bargain, as it barely gets me 2 miles at home in a taxi, if that! The guy passed my bag out the bus window so that I didn't have to trapes past everyone wo th it on my back. The buses have pull out seats in the aisle, so about 12 passengers had to srand up to let me out.
As soon as I stepped out of the bus I was swarmed by pepole asking me whether I wanted a lift. I ended up taking a motorbike to the airport with my massive rucksack on my back.... Slightly dangerous, but living on the eshe for once! Haha. They don't go as fsat as motorbikes at home. It was fun though! My eyes were streaming and my hair was everywhere but it was a great first motorbike ride and one to rremember!
When I got to the airport they kindly informed me that I was the only passenger on my flight going on to Dar after it stopped at zanibar and so they have moved me on to the later flight and are terminating my original flight at Zanzibar. My flight was scheduled for 6.30p., I arrived at the airport at just gone 4pm, and have been moved the 9pm flight! It is literally the most eexpensive airport ever! They wanted over £5 for a bag of haribo, as much as I love sweets, I wasn't going to pay that for it. I went for a bounty in the end, it didn't last long! Today has been an excellent food day for me!
Arnold has been ever so lovely, he has told me not to worry and that if I need anything to ring him and he'll be waiting for me at the airport. He really tries his best to make sure that I am Olay! He kept tabs on me and my journey throughout the whole of today! A great friend.
My flight departed Kilimanjaro just before 9pm and I safely landed in Dar es Salaam shortly after 10pm. It was blissful to have a steaming hot shower and finally feel clean! I met two of Arnold's friends; Rahim and Isaac, they were nice and we all went out for a few drinks. We met some of Arnold's other friends out . A few drinks is never a few drinks though! There was an absolute tool out, I said jambo to him, being in Africa and being polite and he turned to me and said "you f*cking British need to learn the difference between black and white people. I'm f*cking Italian", I apologised and said Ciao and he called me a rude b**** so he shortly got eescorted out of the bar, I can't believe someone could be so rude!
