Day 30 - Suba aluth arrudack wewa
New Year's Day!! We were awoken with a big bang, Sri Lankans appear to set off lots of fire crackers at all times of the day to celebrate new year particularly at 7.30am! We all had a big breakfast together, then we all got ready for a jungle walk in the nearby jungle however we walked through the deserted town where nothing was open due to new year and got to the jungle entrance which was also closed! So wandered back luckily found a supermarket that was open so we could get food for the evening then headed back.
Nihal came round with his wife bearing gifts of food!! Some rice and soya and various new year sweet deserts for us to try! We sat and chilled for a bit while waiting for Roxy to arrive, Roxy is another Warwick student, Jess's clinical partner, who has been doing her elective in India and has flown over to join us for the last 10 days. She arrived and filled us in on everything she has been up to!
We then got all covered up travellers trousers and scarfs at the ready to visit the temple of the tooth which is the main temple in Kandy. It was an interesting building and as it was a special day there were lots of people worshiping and giving gifts of flowers to budda. In the past they had a temple elephant called Raja, he died in 1988 and his body was taxidermied and is now on show in a museum next to the temple, he is massive!!
We headed back to the guesthouse and made a salad again for dinner as everywhere was closed for food! We played some cards after dinner and then said goodbye to Matt and Ross as they were getting the train back to galle early in the morning.
