Day 28 - aaaand relax...
Ouch! Woke with all our calves aching so much, used muscles that aren't usually used climbing Adams peak it seems! We had a very leisurely morning allowing ourselves to sleep in, Rachel and I woke around 7.30am anyway though and went to sit on the balcony to wait for the others to wake. The guesthouse overlooks a jungle with monkeys swinging through the trees! We asked for a pot of tea but had to come inside to drink it as pesky monkeys come and try to take anything from the balcony!
Jess didn't feel too well today, had a bit of an upset stomach so did not feel up to coming out. We decided not to do anything in particular but just to have a walk down into Kandy and have a look around. The guesthouse is about 15 minutes walk into town alongside the lake and the temple, Kandy is a really pretty town. We went to a bakery on the way for some breakfast and then got down into town where is was packed!! This it is due to this weekend being new year all the locals were stocking up on food, cake, drink etc. We went to have a look in the big shopping centre, there were 2 English book shops which we spent quite a long while in and Catherine and I bought some new books to read. There was also a nice tea shop of a plantation we saw on the way to kandy so stocked up on some tea and had a bit of lunch! We then went to a supermarket and did a big shop for the apartment and got a tuktuk back.
When we got back Jess was feeling a little better and we decided to walk back into town to get some alcohol for our new year evening tomorrow as they won't sell alcohol anywhere over the next 2 days. Buying alcohol here is an experience! We went into the supermarket but couldn't find it anywhere so asked the assistant who said we needed to go downstairs.. At the back of the shop were some stairs that went down into this hot sweaty basement which was open to the outside and it was absolutely rammed with Sri Lankan men queuing to stock up on their Arrack for the holiday weekend! We were the only women there and the only white people! So obviously we stuck out like a sore thumb, the queue snaked around the basement and then there was an even bigger queue outside with security guards letting people in one by one, luckily a security guard spotted us looking a bit bewildered and got us to the front of the queue much to the disgust of the others waiting in line! We got our gin and arrack and headed back upstairs to the relief of air con!
Back at the apartment we made ourselves dinner of tuna salad and garlic bread with pineapple for pudding! And had a chilled night reading
