Today I was up and in the city early, and making my way towards hells kitchen when I got distracted by some shopping ! I've noticed the sales are starting ahead of memorial weekend, so I picked up a couple of summer pieces at 30% off. My punishment was to have to carry the cumbersome bag with me for the rest of the day.
My destination is not really anywhere near the subway, so I got to walk through a new area, Hell's Kitchen. This area has gentrified like most of the manhattan neighbourhoods, but you can see echoes of the past in the car workshops, boarded up buildings and a shabbier appearance to the buildings. There are a couple of antique (junk) shops, some funky new restaurants and original delis and grocers.
My destination today is the Intrepid museum of sea air and space. The Intrepid is a decommissioned aircraft carrier, and suffered quite badly with the cyclone sandy. There is the endevour shuttle, which I could see through the barriers, but the thing I was most hoping to see is being repaired and a new building is being built to protect it for the future. On the aircraft deck there were 12 different fighter jets including the tomcat jet made famous by Tom cruise in Top Gun, and an early spy craft.
The lower hanger had even more jets and helicopters, the mechanics of how they stored them and moved them around were amazing, and there was not a long runway for takeoffs and landings! I found the deck quarters interesting, especially the kitchens, mess hall, recreation spaces and sleeping quarters. There is no personal space. But in its time a job onboard the carrier offered opportunities to see the world and the living conditions were considered high for the armed forces. Other bonuses of the museum were a British airways Concorde and a submarine!
I returned back through Hell's Kitchen and got to witness the most dogs walking in a straight line by a professional dog walker. I stopped at a local steakhouse for a $10 lunch special angus burger with handcut chips and drink.
As I was walking back I discovered where the midtown cinemas were, and Star Trek had been released already, so I could not resist! As expected it was excellent and a much bigger improvement on the wrath of khan with a couple of cool twists.
I had almost made it to the train when I noticed gap also was having a sale so I picked up another mid season top at a great price! That's pretty much all the shopping I needed to do done, and on sale for a change.
