With the power still out we headed out for a morning run. Trees still lay in the road but clean up operations were underway. We ran for an hour through the university grounds, in pleasant sunshine.
We had breakfast of eggs & bread on the covered patio, before setting off for PA.
This is when we got our first indication of the damaging effects of the storm for Charlottesville. Starbucks & McDonalds were beyond full as people sought out cool air & the Internet. The road out of town was at a standstill due to faulty traffic signals. This meant we turned & took an alternative route.
After driving for 2.5 hours the towns we passed had also been affected by the storm. Power was out in 3.2million homes we learnt from the radio. Five states had been affected.
When we reached Perry County PA after five & half hours we stopped at a literacy society event. Here I had some lovely food, as well some good conversation. Issues discussed ranged from the monarchy, the euro, & the separation of powers in US government.
Around 21:30 we completed our final stage to Newport. Here we met up with Stefan, Amanda, & AJ.
