This weekend I went to Sevilla to watch Sevilla v Atlético Madrid with three other people from our group. We left Friday afternoon. It was only a three and a half hour bus ride, which isn't bad after an eight hour bus ride the weekend before. Friday night we hung out on the rooftop terrace at our hostel and walked around the city for awhile with Australians and Canadians (no big deal right?). With this group of people it was the perfect weekend.
Saturday we got up and went on a walking tour that was provided by our hostel (for 9 euro a night this hostel was legit). It was three hours long, but we saw a lot of amazing things. We learned about the world's largest cathedral- by demensions, not height- and part of Christopher Colombus is buried there. The rest of his body is in Central America. We learned that the river that runs through the city is stagnate to prevent flooding. We saw La Plaza España. It had information booths for each province in Spain, because that's how people learned things in the old days (that's how our tour guide justified it). It also had a river going around the plaza that you could rent boats and row around it. This symbolizes finding the New World. We also saw part of the university that used to be a tobacco factory. Considering we weren't actually in the city for very long, we learned a lot about the city.
Saturday afternoon we relaxed and walked around some more. We headed to the game pretty early because we had to get our tickets. It was about a 40 minute walk to the stadium and we definately left the tourist part of the city. We got to the street of the staduim and there were so many people. Fireworks were going off and people were chanting and cheering and there was still over an hour before they even let people into the stadium. There were police men everywhere. They were on horses and walking around. It was crazier then any sporting event I have ever attended, by far.In the stadium there were fires and chanting in the stadium. Everybody had flags and scarfs. This was before the game even started. Once the game started people were just as crazy. We had perfect seats to watch the games and the crazier fans. It was amazing to watch! It ended 1-1. No overtime or shoot outs. The clock stopped and everybody just upped and left just as fast as they flooded into the stadium. This seemed odd to me, but so do a lot of other things in this country so I just roll with it. We were so exhausted by the time we made it back to our hostel, we all just crashed.
Sunday we got up and went to mass in the world's largest cathedral. It was only 30 minutes, which is basically the world's most efficient mass. I was super impressed. We returned later in the day to tour it. I got to see Christopher Colombus' tomb. Apparently, there are about 130 chapels in this one building. That should give you an idea of how big it is. Everything was so detailed. It was so beautiful! We also climbed up the bell tower (about 32 stories) to see the whole city. It was worth it. It was gorgeous!
After this we ate some Ben and Jerry's ice cream and got on our bus back to Cáceres. I think this weekend was my favorite weekend so far. The weather was perfect. Our group was perfect. We did a lot of stuff, but it wasn't too exhausting. Everything was perfect. Next weekend is Morocco. I can't wait!
