So bit of a break from blogging as for the past three days I have been on Fraser Island, home of the dingos! What an amazing island, paradise!
It starting with a briefing session where we met out group and got told about the dangers on Fraser, including snakes, spiders, sea life and ofcourse the dingos.
In our group we had a couple (Rachel and Marc) and her mum (Carmen) they were all lovely and we got on really well. Then there was Philippo, Luka and Fabio... The three Italians who by the end of the trip had managed to piss off the entire camp including the leaders!
Our first day meant getting up early to leave Dingos resort in Rainbow Beach. Suprise suprise our Italian compadres were late... Holding us all up when we finally set going we drove a short while to the transfer boat. This was a drive in drive off boat which departed from a sandy spit of land to fraser. We then swapped drivers and drove inland to Lake McKenzie...this location was my idea of heaven on earth! Beautiful white sand and crystal clear water. We were told to use the sand to moisturise our skin and condition our hair and wow ... It worked!
Once we'd finished up at the lake we headed for camp and found our tents. Then time to cook. Cue Italian annoyance number 1! They insisted the chicken we had been provided with was "off" to the extent they complained to the leaders. We told them if they didn't want to eat it then all it meant was more for us! If the chicken was off... It effected none of us! Then the drinking commenced and the camp was filled with frankly horny campers seeking each other out and disappearing into "private" places. Our Italians decided to take to the tent the three of them and one girl... I think they must think tents are sound proof... I assure you they are not and we heard everything!
Laura and I also had a guest in our tent but not of the human species. We, being the wimps we are, shone our torches all over our tent before entering to search out any spiders or snakes before giving it the all clear. We enter the tent and begin to close the doors when all of a sudden a huge mouse rears it's head sending Laura off screaming! Marc headed up and helped me to get the mouse out of the tent, poor thing was terrified!
The next morning we headed to champagne pools and this was my turn to take to the wheel. I did the sand driving.... Felt like driving on ice as we navigating through dunes and hard sand. The pools were picturesque but crowded and I couldn't help but think that they resulted the cliffs of guernsey.
Next up was Indian head... A climb to the top of the cliff gave an I pressing view of cathedral beach and the sea lift down below.
Back at camp we prepared lunch before setting off again to Eli creek where we jumped into the water and like a lazy river it carried us back down to the beach.
A few minutes drive on we jumped out of the cars to get some pictures of the ship that was left beached on the sand. This was incredible! Although rusted and falling, you could still make out details on the metal and some deck boards where still in tact. Was quite and eerie sight to be honest.
Back at camp, the evening was more tame than the previous night and the Italians tried to make amends by cooking our dinner of steak... Over the fire pit as the cue for the cookers was silly! They succeeded and we enjoyed our dinner with a few drinks before calling it a night.
We decided to sleep in the car instead of the tent as some idiot had left the dingo hates open allowing 6 dingos to enter and roam the campsite! God job we did as during the night a fight broke out between some rowdy English, falling and crushing what would of been our tent for the night!
On our final day we headed to lake wobbie, a lake at the bottom of some vast and amazing sand dunes. The walk to and from the dunes was a fair distance so we didn't spend too long here but that didn't bother us too much as it was super windy and wind and sand dunes don't make for a great mix!
After a bite to eat we boarded the ferry back to the mainland and re checked into the hostel. On finding our room we were suprised to find Nina (our friend from gillighans) was our room mate! We've been bumping into her everywhere!
We had a good chat and a catch up before calling it a night (after a hot
Shower... The first in a few days). Fraser Island was an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone but it deffinately takes it out of you!
