Woke up early and put the wet tent down as it rained during the night. Got a birthday card from Grainne but had nothing in it as she had forgot to write it. The tuk-tuk to the port was manic, nearly running over lots of people and crashing all the time. It was just as bad getting on the ferry, pushing and shoving your way on the boat. Two guys tried saying there was a fee to go through the gate but they were just trying to scam us. The ferry was quite boring, when we got to Zanzibar we had lunch in someones house where we sat on the floor and had pilau rice, veg and sauce which was a really good meal. Then we went on a spice tour which was interesting digging up and sampling fresh spices like cinnamon, lemon grass, ginger....
We then tried lots of fruit including pink and white orange, sweet lime and a durian fruit which smells absolutely disgusting, like sewage, but doesnt taste that bad. we made our way up to the hotel next to the beach with its white sands and turquoise sea. We settled in then made our way to the restaurant where the rest of the people on the truck put in for a sea food platter as a birthday present which was really nice of them all. It was so good, really fresh and the octopus was the best bit, it was so tasty even though i didnt think i would like it.
Here we started drinking and everyone seemed to be having a good time so we made our way to a full moon party that was happening on the island in a huge club/beach house which was awesome.
The next day everyone emerged slowly, a bit death like. But today was a beach day so it was very chilled. Me and the boys all got funny henna tattoos. I got a dragon one, Charlie got a mermaid, Kieran got a camel and Patrik got a cartoon lion. We ate out at a fish restaurant this night which was the best fish I've ever had it was delicious and could of eaten so much of it.
The next day we said goodbye to Ben who had been with us since Cape Town and went to prison island where they had giant tortoises which weighed around 300kg and were half as tall as me. A small one stood on my foot and was not expecting how heavy it was I didnt move. My foot hurt a few days after. After this we went snorkeling where we saw starfish, other colourful fish and coral which looked a bit dead but was really good as it was free to do. After this we met up with everyone else and our guide from the first day. He took us round Stone town and showed us a church built where the slavery port was. This was one of the last places slavery still happened that were bought by Arab people it didn't stop until 1876. We were shown the room where people were held before they were transported and it was very eerie and scary.
That night we went around stone town and went to a market where they had fish lined up on a table and then they bbq'd it for you. we had lobster, kingfish, kole kole, baracuda, shark, tuna and other things.
The next day lunch was also very good, fish again, we had pilli pilli perch which came whole covered in chilli lime and garlic, also swordfish with avocado and pilau rice. We looked around sty one towns really pretty architecture and then got the ferry back on the rough sea without having a seat where we were being thrown about all over the place-lots of people were throwing up.
