Anne and Phillip picked us up to drive us to the orphanage it was a long drive and I fell asleep Dan stayed awake the whole journey though. It started thundering and raining so much that when we arrived at the orphanage there was a power cut. That meant when we were introduced to everyone we couldnt see who they were. They asked us how we found out about them and we mentioned Greg a guy at my uni who sent an email they got so excited at us knowing Greg that we didnt have the heart to tell them we had never even seen him or really spoken to him. The next day we went on a huge walk around their little village and got shown all parts of the orphanage the kids are on school holidays so they were here every day. Yhe orphanage is really self sufficient it has cooks, management, women who wash the kids clothes, a carpenter/welder, a hairdressers, a seamstress, and a garage to mend cars. The boys are all really cute there are about 30 boys ranging from 4 to 18. But they still are younger mentally, Moses for instance is 17 but only in the equivalent of year 4 in England. We mostly just play everyday with the kids and watch videos and play uno. In the mornings we help them read or teach them computer skills.
One day we went on a day trip to thompson falls mainly just because we wanted to go to equator. We went to a tea plantation and then to the equator where we got shown how water turns different ways on either side. Then onto thomspon falls where these people dressed up in tribe outfits danced for us but it was really awkward and we didnt like it. We walked right down to the bottom of the falls but it was such an effort getting back up. On the way back we visited an orphanage just taken over by sure 24 but are much worse off they had not eaten for two days earlier in the week, there were girls there which I liked and they did a braid in my hair.
Back at the orphanage some of the boys who go to high school were home for their holidays, and the next day iIlet them have free reign of my camera to take whatever photos they wanted they took nearly 400 and 2 videos of them all fighting. That day we played with all the kids in the village, some of the girls have brothers at sure 24.
On Sunday we went to church. It was 3 and a half hours!! It was only this long because they have four pastors and their songs are 4 times as long as ours. They had an american pastor there and he had such a bad stutter that we could hardly understand him but the pastor translating into swahili could. There was also a man from London who ran a charity to find foster parents for Kenyan babies that had been abandoned in hospitals. He said their last adoption took only 8 days from start to finish. Which is pretty amazing!
They cant say my name so we get collectively called Dan or muzungo which means white person but we dont find it offensive. The meals here arent great we have tea for breakfast and then cabbage and ugali (like a maize mash that doesnt taste like anything) for lunch and dinner we have started to fantasize about what foods we want the most. Here is only one channel on the very fuzzy tiny tv and the only thing to watch is soy tu duena a mexican soap opera dubbed into english, but weve missed a few due to power cuts!
