we too a day trip to naples from rome with mum, we could only get a specific train because we didnt want to pay for reservations. italian trains for interrail are really confusing and thats why we ended up paying €10 euros to get to rome from venice. naples train station was like a building site and we couldnt really find how to get to pompeii the guide book said we needed to get a particular line to pompeii but there were no signs and the place was packed! we eventually found it underground and its like subway/ tube that goes all around the coast. we bought the ticket and the pompeii ticket at the same time only because there was a subway thing coming and the queue for tickets only was huge! getting off we looed into going up mount vesuvious but found out that we really didnt have enought time to do both and we'd already planned to go to pompeii anyway whic was only 100 m away. getting in a guide man started hassling us to buy his tour because he said we would get very lost, which we did but o well. pompeii was great there was still paint on te walls and pavements and roads and vases and everything was pretty much intact. we overheard a guide saying that the rock pompeiis made out of absorbs heat so makes it much hotter than normal. considering "normal" was averaging 38-40 degree the heat really was unbearable! mum was blowing up like a balloon and so couldnt really wlak very far as pompeii is huge and only like 30% or something has actaully been excavated. it is really hard to know where to go without a guide as everything is named differently on the map like the brothel is called lupanar ?! but luckily the usually useless guide book managed to tell us this info. that was really weird cos theres just loads of paintings of quite large people aving sex and the beds and just made out of the same rock that the pavemnet and everything else is made out of. we had to leave there pretty soon as loads of swarming chinese took over flashing there cameras even though theres like 10 giant signs with a no flash picture and 50 tried to cram into a space a bit bigger then a garden shed. mum had left by this point she couldnt stand the heat any more and she could hardly walk we found her in a cafe having her 3rd billion coffee of the day. the only other thing we wanted to see was the bodies in ash that pompeii is so famous for. but we couldnt locate it on the map we asked some italian police and they eventually told us which is a good job because otherwise wed of never found it. there are only like 12 "bodies" all in a line and like 4 are children. they are amde out of cement as when excavating the piles of ash the bodies have by now decomposed and theres just a uman shaped hole whre they used to be and the teyfill that with cement and let it dry then dig down to get the cement body out. i dont really know ow they no when theres a person shaped hole approaching but its cool. they look so life like they still have facial features and its quite creepy to see themin there last moments. not that many people actually died from the volcano as many had eft the city once the volcano started doing stuff. te other weird thing is that all over pompeii you can see mount vesuvious in the background the thing tat caused all tis devastation.
after finding mum we had finished alot earlier then planned we bought some souvaniers made out of volcano and headed for a couple of hours in naples.
what a s***hole.
it is the awfullest place we went to it is like the ghetto of italy. mum decided she wanted to see the cathedral we were very much churched out at this point but we went to try and find it anyway. everyone kept giving us the dirtiest looks even though they must get a lot of tourists in naples. and there is rubbish everywhere they dont put it in bins they just put in on te street from old teles to food to half a bike all lying out on the roads. we managed to grab a sliceof pizza for te journey home as it is the home of pizza!!
