Popayan
Our first day in Popayan we got breakfast from a chicken and rice place then found another cheaper place to stay. We found a really cool hostel right on the main square, we got a private room which had a lounging bed and then stairs up to a bed above which was really cool. We spent a bit of time getting showers and then went out. The town was really nice but everything was white which hurt your eyes if you weren't wearing sunglasses. It was a small pretty town with not much to do apart from buy ice cream, walk around cobbled streets and then get a slush with weird cream on top. We headed to an Italian for dinner where we asked for the special which turned out to be a drink, a spaghetti bolognese, a steak with mushroom sauce, salad and rice as well as a chocolate cake dessert. It was an amazing meal. We then watched Netflix in the hostel before going to sleep.
The next morning we headed to the bus station for a bus to San Augustine which we found fairly easily but it didn't go for another hour so we grabbed breakfast in the bus station.
When we got on the bus, after about an hour we saw a guy pointing up the road shaking his head but the bus carried on, we joked about another landslide. We eventually came to a shard stop where the road was just missing, it had fallen away completely with no way around so immediately headed back to Papayan. The bus driver said we were still going so we waited about half an hour before setting off again. We had to go a different way, along tiny narrow unpaved roads where the driver had to ask for directions. After another hour and a half we stopped and the engine went off and the bonnet up. We had broken down in the middle of nowhere, the driver went off to find signal on his phone before coming back a while later and it was apparent we weren't moving. About an hour and a half after breaking down another van turned up to take us the rest of the journey. It was a painful journey with bumps all the way and for about 6 hours. We had to switch to a mini bus just outside town but it was really dark and late now so were worried about finding a hostel.
One man waited for the bus to advertise his hostel which was very cheap so just went with him and it was quite a nice place with a nice view and private room.
The guy working recommended a good restaurant to head to as it was late, it was chicken chips and rice of course, bus it was actually quite nice compared to others.
The next day we walked up to the ruins which was a long sweaty walk, the ruins were really cool though they were large stone sculptures of people/animals guarding entrances to tombs. They were quite interesting and there was a lot of them, we couldn't see all of them as some sections were cut off for restoration.
After this we walked back around town and chilled out in the hostel before our night bus. There was a really creepy american hippy in the hostel always lurking outside the dorms being really weird So we stayed away from him.
We eventually walked down to get food and get the bus to Bogotá on an awful night bus with no leg room what so ever, we barely slept because it was so uncomfortable and freezing cold and we actually arrived on time but at 6am, the one time we hoped the bus would be late!
