We had yet another horrible night bus journey where we couldn't sleep and then piled into a mini bus to continue on towards Salento.
Salento is a famous coffee region in Colombia, and once we arrived we decided to do a famous hike but having thrown our hiking boots away in Popayan we only had flip flops in which to do the hike!
This was not a good idea! Once we eventually arrived to the start of the hike we realised it was all uneven and muddy. AND we don't even like hiking!
We started off thinking we would never be able to do it going between big fields where cows were mooing at us. Here there are also the tallest palm trees in the world and people were very impressed by them. I think we were too hot and bothered! We then entered forest where it was more shaded and there were little flimsy bridges to cross the river from time to time. There were also little waterfalls everywhere so it was very pretty.
We eventually came to the fork in the road where left we could go see some hummingbirds and right we could go up a really big steep hill to complete the circuit of the hike. We decided left and even that was still quite long and uphill to go see the hummingbirds. Once we eventually arrived and paid to get our drink, Dan and I were absolutely decided against finishing the hike and we were back the way we came.
There were loads and loads of hummingbirds at this place. Green ones, black ones and one shiny one with a really long tail feather. They were everywhere! It was cool! They also fed a mangy coati, the same animal we saw at iguazu falls, I don't know why it looked like that, weird.
We headed back the way we came happy to be leaving and then eventually headed back to our room to get showers. Near our hostel we found somewhere doing currys and decided to eat there having not found a curry place in 4 months of South America.
Dan got a tikka masala and I got a Thai green curry but his was better and I was jealous! It tasted so good to have something with some flavour for once.
At night we headed to a bar to play a Colombian game called tejo With Billy (Tara's friend) and Tara. The games consists of throwing a big metal object at a target made with clay. In the middle is a metal ring and on that is little parcels filled with gunpowder. If your target hits one it explodes with a huge bang and then there's also a little fire. Its a cool game. We played for an hour and at first we were all rubbish. It was boys against girls and at first the girls were winning. But the guys hit the target a couple of times and ended up winning the game. We only had ten minutes left of our time after the first game so we just played best of 5. At first Dan was completely rubbish at the game but ended up hitting the target twice and eventually becoming really good. I didn't hit the target once in the proper game and as time was running out I didn't think I would hit it at all! But in the last 5 minutes I hit it twice and Billy even managed to get one on video! Which was really really cool! I'll have to upload it if I remember.
The next day Dan woke up feeling really really sick, so we both didn't go on the coffee tour. Instead we went to a place called brunch run by an american that had some of the best burgers ever!! Even at 9am. I got a philly cheese steak and Dan got BBQ chicken. Both were massive and came with hash browns because it was still morning time so that made it even better! Luckily Dan ate it all because he didn't end up eating very much over the next few days.
We waited for Tara to come back and then headed to Medellin, a city north of Salento. Again we had to get a minibus and then change into a slightly bigger minibus but this one was fancy and even had WiFi! Dan had a fever so most of his bus journey consisted of being too hot or too cold and sleeping. The view was incredible full of jungle mountains and coffee plantations so I'm glad we actually did this part in the daytime. When we finally arrived in Medellin we headed to a hostel in the lonely planet hoping they would have room and they did. Dan went to bed and me and Tara looked up flights to Cartagena because thew bus was so expensive. It turned out that flying was cheaper than getting the bus so we booked flights for 2 days time.
The next day Dan stayed in bed and me and Tara went for a quick look round Medellin we went to visit a square full of Botero statues. Botero made painting and statues of people and animals that were 'large' NOT FAT, that took up all the space of the painting. They also have small features in comparison to their big face. In the square we saw tons of these statues from a fat spartan to a fat dog to a giant fat face.
We came back to the hostel where Dan was still in bed and then watched a film and lazed around most of the day.
In the morning we were up early to get a bus to the airport to get our flight. It said check in started from 3 hours before the flight but we had to wait over an hour for the people to arrive to check in our bags. The airport was tiny but there was a burger king with free refills so we took advantage of that whilst waiting to get on our flight to Cartagena.
