Today we climbed "butterfly mountain" in Faerie Glen.
Okay, so that's not its real name, but Mark couldn't remember what it was called so the kids renamed it. Butterfly mountain is an incredibly apt name though because there are the most ridiculous number of butterflies around there.
We made it to the top fairly quickly as the kids were both very excited and skipped from rock to rock like mountain goats. The route is circular, so after a little break to spot game at the top we started to head down the other side.
Unfortunately, we got right near the bottom only to find that the river had swelled with the rainstorms overnight and we couldn't cross it any longer.
There was no way the kids were going to make it back over the mountain to head home, so we decided to gamble on another route and see if we could find a bridge further up the river.
We couldn't follow the rivers edge as the bush was too thick, so we headed part way back up the mountain to a spot where we'd seen the path fork earlier.
Despite adding quite a distance to the journey (and daddy stressing about us not having enough water) it was a great call. Not only was there another bridge, on the way I saw two baby mongooses and we spotted zebra and buck really close.
It did mean poor Aunty Gemma had to wait two hours in her classroom for us after school finished though :-(
Just as we got home the heavens opened and there was the most incredible thunderstorm. William loved being out in the warm rain, but poor uncle mark had to carry the puppy (he'd carried him the last bit of the walk anyway!) because he was so tired.
Then we jumped on the gautrain and headed back to Sandton.
