Are we there yet !!! Find out soon...if you haven't read Croatia "do not pass go and do not collect £200, back one blog entry"
OK time to update properly - its been a bit hectic in Romania!
We were supposed to go straight from an overnight stop in central Hungary to a nice village in Western Transylvania however the roads and the traffic were against us. After Croatia with their very good fast roads we'd expected to be able to do the journey in about 6 hours however western Hungary was a bit slow and then we ground to a standstill just after crossing the border. As the clocks go forward an hour there too it was 7.30pm with a least 3 hours to go so Gordon had the bright idea of stopping over in a hotel. Arad is a decent sized city close to Hungary so off we went and amazingly considering I looked like a wet rag we got booked in to the Hotel Continental. And not only did we get booked in we had to get a suite as there were no rooms left - it was about the size of our flat in Winchester and we could have fitted the van into one of the 2 bathrooms! The security guards looked a bit taken aback as Gordon parked the van in the guests only carpark but I think they saw the funny side and even helped him with the reversing!
We managed to fit in a really nice dinner with local specialities - eg Sarmale which is cabbage parcels of mince and rice in a spicy sauce, nicer than it sounds - and almost a £50 bottle of wine as Gordon hadn't quite got his head round the exchange rate yet! I'd expected Romania to be all peasants and haystacks but Arad was quite grand with buildings like you'd find in Budapest and Vienna and since it was ruled by those Hapsbergs, not really surprising.
So we spent over a weeks camping budget but what the hell, it was great! (So never let it be said that I don't know how to show a girl a good time !)
