A funny thing happened on the way to Prague! Stood at the bu stop outside our campsite waiting to go into the city and who should be there bu a girl G used to work with at Johnson Matthey, Monica, who left about 18 months ago - what are the chances of that? She's Australian and she and her boyfriend are touring Europe before they go home. We also worked out we were on the same campsite in Oslo at the same time but just ignored each other, so in future we'll make more of an effort to talk to the Brits!
After catching up on the bus we went our separate ways and G and I did the tourist trail - round the castle, well the bits you can do for free anyway, then stopped for a beer, walked a bit more, then stopped for a beer etc. Well you have to partake of the local fare and it is REALLY cheap! The nices bar we went to was the American bar in the basement of Obneci Dum which is just a building but decorated inside and out with Art Noiuveau work so all tiles and mosaics and fantastic chandeliers etc. All very sophisticated so we progressed from beer to champagne cocktails/martinis - not really feeling like a budget tour at this point!
With Gordon's strange fascination for graveyards we also went round the cemetary in the old Jewish quarter. He's previously taken me on a romantic tour of Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris where among others Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison are buried, but this was a bit different with hundreds of graves all piled into a small space - as the guide book said, the ghetto was crowded even in death. At the same time we visited a synagogue where the nemes of all the Czech Jews killed in the holocaust, very moving especially after the Nazism exhibition in Nuremberg!
Sounds like we were having a barrel of laughs and we continued the next day with a visit to the museum of communism. Doesn't sound like holiday stuff does it but we want to learn a bit from this trip so bear with us! This was again really interesting mainly concentrating on the impact in Czechoslovakia but watching the footage of the velvet revolution in Wenceslas Square was inspiring. History that you feel is still really relevant today!
After that things got back to normal with a visit to the shopping streets and some more beer! We even found a Marks and Spencer in case I was short of pants. We really liked Prague - a combination of beautiful buildings, history and nice bars so we will probably come back again one day, but 2 days is enough for us in a city so we're off to the countryside in South Bohemia.
