So after a city break in Prague, we've headed south for a short break back in the country.
As previously mentioned, we don't have sat nav coverage in the Czech Republic, so the journey out of the city's suburbs was memorable. Instead of the relaxed tones of our Gloria ("take the second exit on the roundabout and then straight on"), we had Miranda, who took a bit of time to get her bearings and decided eventually on the scenic route, down little country lanes for about 60km (just to clear the worst of the traffic and avoid the complicated ring road). It is better fun with Miranda at the helm and the language is more entertaining. Still can't complain beacuse we reached our destination just fine, a village I called "Chav City" on the outskirts of Cesky Krumlov.
Dutch campsite, full of Dutch people (we've seen more Cloggies, than any other nationality so far - they get everywhere).
Anyway first day given over to walking the surrounding hills and countryside. Some lovely scenery and nice and quiet. Second day we cycled the 10km or so into Cesky Krumlov proper. The town in reality was much better than the write up in the "Rough Guide". It's on two levels. We entered under a stone arch beneath the castle, coming upon the river that divides the town (old & new). Lots of people rafting and canoeing. We had a lovely day wandering the little alleyways and walking along the banks of the river in the newer bit (still v old) called "Stare Mesto", then climbed up to the castle and gardens (really old bit), which wind there way for what seems like miles above the town.
Then it was the cycle ride home. Notable only for the beer we stopped for on the way back when we reached "Chav City". Lovely bar with tables outside near the church and gardens, sun shining and cold Budvar, what more could you ask for...well not the little Czech boy (about 4 or 5 I think) sitting at the table next door, who farted continuously, noisily and smellily the entire time. Still like the good tourists we are we smiled at the parents, who smiled back and assuming it was a quaint local custom we were unaware of joined in too ! Anyway then it all kicked off, so we skeedaddled back up the hill to the quiet comfort of our mobile home.
Next stop is Austria, we've managed to get in touch with the Vienna Hash, so a run is on the cards for Monday evening...old habits die hard eh !
More to follow I'm sure
