Awoke to our first overcast, cool and rainy day so decided to continue on along Lake Ontario toward Kingston. Stopped at little town of Colborne for some breakfast and after chatting with our waitress about taking the scenic route instead of the freeway, she gave us a suggestion for a detour - past Elton John's house!! For real - and what a magnificent mansion! As a result we ended up detouring a little further, not totally intentionally, but the lakeside scenery through the little towns was lovely. So lush and green with the hint of leaves starting to turn and some gorgeous lakeside cottages as well as many that could have been straight from "Gone with the wind". A highlight was taking the car ferry across the lake from Glenora, so picturesque; and we had to stop at an orchard stall for some apples as we were in the heart of Ontario apple country. Kingston was an interesting and historical lakeside town to wander around before resuming our journey to Ottawa. Took the freeway option to make up some time so arrived in Canada's capital, Ottawa (population of 900,000 so not a massive metropolis like Toronto), about 3 pm . Didn't take long to find some accommodation for the night fairly close to downtown (a first - a suite with a kitchen) and were wandering off in the rain before 4pm. Decided to make the most of our limited time and booked an hour long Amphibus tour at 5pm so fitted in a beer at nearby Irish pub, Darcy Mcgees. Despite the weather the tour was great briefly showing us the important sites in this incredibly picturesque city by a bus that travelled on land and water! Our entertaining tour guide, Ray, took us across the Alexandra Bridge over the Ottawa River to Gatineau, the river being the border between Ontario and Quebec. He highlighted the many historically significant and architecturally outstanding buildings including Parliament Hill, Supreme Court, the beautiful hotel Chateau Laurier, Rideau Hall (the Governor Generals residence) , the Royal Canadian Mint and various embassies and consulates. Very informative. Had dinner and drinks on way back, fitting in another call home to Roey to ensure he's ready for his departure (on their way now!)
