GoneExploring
We set out after breakfast and our early morning swim to visit the town of Port Isaac, made famous by the 'Doc Martin' series. The weather is rainy and blustery as we drive through the neighbouring and unspoilt Port Gaverne. We are advised to park at the top of the town and walk as the streets are very narrow and difficult to navigate. We begin to appreciate the advice as we walk the narrow, sloping streets. The view over the harbour is beautiful from high above. We enjoy exploring the myriad of gift shops and tea rooms as we make our way down to harbour level. It is just about now that the heavens open and we dive for cover under the shelter of a nearby pub/restaurant. We decide to partake of a cup of tea and some locally made fudge as it seems we will require shelter for a while. Turns out it was a good move as the rain clears and the sun comes out to allow us to climb the steep hill to Doc Martin's house, Fern Cottage. We can't help thinking how awful it must be for the residents of Port Isaac to have hundreds of tourists tramping through their streets day after day.
We make our way back to the car park and decide to have lunch in a nearby restaurant. I'm afraid to say that the Cornish Pasty was not up to yesterday's standard.
Charlotte suggests a visit to Polzeath Beach on the recommendation of her friends. What a fabulous beach; the dog loved it! The beach is long and narrow, sand and shingle. There are many interesting rock pools and a freshwater stream runs down the beach to meet the sea. Truffles loves the freedom of the beach and there are many surfers enjoying the huge waves. Charlotte takes Truffles down to the water's edge just as the tide decides to proceed up the beach, chasing both her and Truffles. It was so funny to watch them try to beat the water, unsuccessfully. I was laughing so hard, I couldn't get my camera out of my pocket in time to capture the event! Needless to say, when we got back to the car, we were quite wet and sandy.
From here we decide to visit nearby Rock in the Camel estuary. It has a lovely sandy beach with boats, windsurfers and the ferry to Padstow.
This evening we enjoyed a delicious meal at The Old Wainhouse Inn.
